We got GREAT news at the last doctors visit with our metabolic specialist last week. We were told Sophie could start eating 1 Tablespoon of Gerber rice cereal a day in place of a bottle. They said she is doing really good and handling 360-390 phe a day. Which is good. But to give you some perspective a whole banana is 99 phe, a kiwi is 120 phe the tablespoon of rice cereal is 15 phe. She can eat only up to 390 phe a day. Dustin and I were so excited about the rice cereal we wanted to try it right away... but Sophie was not so excited. All three of us about had a meltdown trying to get this child to eat! So we decided it wasn't the time to start and went to google for some feeding advise. We were doing it all wrong. Below was the first attempt at rice cereal.
So we decided to forget about that night and pretend it never happened. We are calling the calm happy feeding ( technically the 2nd time, but really who's counting).
It was so much better. Sophie really liked it this time and ate the whole tablespoon. I posted some pictures from the event too! For Dustin and myself, Sophie being able to eat some kind of food is such a blessing. We have been told stories from other parents of children with PKU that their children were not able to eat anything except the formula until ages 6,7, even 8. We feel so blessed!
Love it, love it, love it! And it looks like she does too. I'm soooo happy for you all. Can't wait to hear if it helps her sleep :)
ReplyDeleteahh first-time parents...like how you had her buckled into the highchair like she was going to go somewhere with that big trey in front of her:) Glad this time went much better for her, I wish I had the job of looking what people google..."how to feed a baby rice cereal" ha ha too funny! Did go like this:
ReplyDelete1. Strap the baby into the highchair
2. Take off all clothes
3. Use the biggest bowl available
4. Spoon some rice creal out
5. Shove it in their mouth
6. Wipe off excess
